Jesús Navas: The Departure of a Sevilla FC Icon
Jesús Navas, the greatest symbol of Sevilla's academy, will leave his lifelong team at the end of this season, as announced from the stage of all his dreams. With him goes a living legend of the club, following a "very difficult" decision, as he confessed, which has almost plunged Sevillistas into depression.
The Spanish international (51 caps and 5 goals for Spain) is a legend and history of Sevilla, making his debut at just 18 years old on November 23, 2003, against Espanyol. He has shown a resurgence since his return to his beloved club in the summer of 2017, after a successful stint at Manchester City (2013-17).
Due to his impeccable conduct, professionalism, and lifelong devotion to Sevilla since joining the club at 15, the announced departure of Jesús Navas González has caused sadness, disappointment, and even outrage among the fans. Many Sevillistas have criticized the club on social media for not offering a proper renewal to such a symbol like Navas.
Jesús Navas is a national football legend, especially for Sevilla, as he has remained an indisputable player under all Sevilla coaches in recent years, despite being 38 and a half years old, consistently delivering outstanding performances.
He is also a legend of the Spanish national team, being the oldest player to represent Spain (37 years and 206 days last June), and he still hopes to be called up for the upcoming Euro Cup. He holds the record as the only European player to have won a World Cup (2010), a Euro Cup (2012), and a Nations League (2023) so far.
Furthermore, he is Sevilla's most decorated player with eight titles: four UEFA/Liga Europa trophies (2006, 2007, 2020, and 2023), one European Super Cup (2006), one Spanish Super Cup (2007), and two Copa del Rey titles (2007 and 2010), adding the Premier League 2013-14, an FA Cup, and a League Cup with Manchester City.
Relentless on the wing, Navas, dubbed the "El Duende de Los Palacios," arrived at Sevilla at 15 after being scouted and nicknamed by another club legend, Pablo Blanco, as the "kid who dribbled through puddles." He was spotted during a match in his hometown of Los Palacios, where he stood out as a skillful and daring young talent.
The captain of Sevilla, despite spending four seasons at Manchester City (2013-17) after his transfer in the summer of 2013 for around 25 million euros, holds the record for most appearances in the Sevilla shirt (688 official matches). He's humble, introverted, and shy, qualities that may have limited his international appearances in the past, preferring to let his game speak rather than talking in front of cameras.
Navas, who played his 500th La Liga match in the defeat against Cádiz (0-1) on Wednesday, is the 13th player in LaLiga history with the most appearances in the top flight, behind Zubizarreta and Joaquín Sánchez - tied at 622 -, Raúl García (606), Raúl González (550), Eusebio Sacristán (543), Paco Buyo (542), Sergio Ramos (534), Manolo Sanchís (523), Leo Messi (520), Iker Casillas (510), Xavi Hernández (505), and Miquel Soler (504).
