(VIDEO) Atlético Madrid Freefall Continues with Another LaLiga Loss to Betis
Manuel Pellegrini’s side took the field with the intent to build on their previous win in Pamplona (2-1) and establish themselves in the hunt for European spots, with the Copa del Rey campaign starting next week.
An own goal by Uruguayan defender José María Giménez in the opening minutes was enough for Betis to secure a 1-0 victory. Despite Betis’ dominance, they squandered numerous chances to extend the lead, while Atlético Madrid’s late reaction wasn't enough to prevent their first LaLiga defeat of the season.
The multiple significant absences, with six from Betis and five from Atlético, didn’t diminish the interest in a match where both teams were eager to reaffirm their status in LaLiga after recent disappointments in continental competitions.
Diego Simeone’s team, which also won their last LaLiga match against Leganés (3-1), arrived in Seville knocked down to fourth place after Villarreal’s victory in Valladolid (2-1). However, they had a chance to close the gap to within one point of second place, Real Madrid, following the latter's 4-0 defeat to Barça on Saturday. Nonetheless, the loss ultimately cost Atlético a position and raised further uncertainty.
Simeone opted this time for Mozambican Reinildo Mandava at left back and Brazilian Samuel Lino ahead of him, leaving Norwegian striker Alexander Sorloth on the bench. But just four minutes into the game, the plan unraveled with Betis' opening goal.
Betis pressed from the start, allowing Moroccan Ez Abde to find space on the left and send in a cross that Giménez, in his attempt to clear, deflected into his own net, leaving Slovenian goalkeeper Jan Oblak helpless.
The goal did not slow down the Sevillian side, who faced an Atlético team struggling to connect with their forwards, Frenchman Antoine Griezmann and Argentine Julián Álvarez. Fifteen minutes in, Abde had a chance to double the lead but missed one-on-one against Oblak.
Atlético switched to a five-man defense, but it wasn’t enough to hold off Betis' relentless attacks, as they searched for a second goal. Around the 30-minute mark, Abde came close again, but the ball struck the crossbar.
Betis entered halftime frustrated, as their strong play had only produced a single goal, while Atlético breathed a sigh of relief after a lackluster first half.
Simeone made two substitutions at the start of the second half, bringing on Sorloth and Javi Galán in place of Conor Gallagher and Reinildo. With these changes, Atlético showed a bit more presence, though Betis maintained their intensity, albeit with doubts about sustaining their physical level.
In the 65th minute, a controversial moment arose when Pablo Fornals hit the crossbar, and on the rebound, Javi Galán made a header clearance close to a Betis player. The referee initially awarded a penalty but overturned it after a VAR review.
The 1-0 scoreline kept the game open in the final stretch. Argentine Ángel Correa, with only a few minutes on the field, hit the post in the 80th minute and the crossbar shortly after. However, time ran out for Atlético, and they were unable to equalize.
