(PHOTOS) Ronald Araújo Proposes Marriage After Renewing with Barcelona
January 23 has become a significant date for Ronald Araújo, as the Uruguayan center-back experienced an unforgettable day filled with major developments in both his professional and personal life.
Contract Extension with FC Barcelona Until 2031
On Thursday afternoon, FC Barcelona announced Araújo’s contract renewal through 2031, ending speculation about his future. For weeks, rumors had swirled about a potential departure, with Juventus emerging as a strong contender for his signature. However, Araújo opted to continue his career at Camp Nou, reaffirming his commitment to the Catalan giants.
A Memorable Proposal
Araújo’s joy extended beyond football. On the same day, he proposed to his partner, Abigail Oliveira, who shared the emotional moment on social media, celebrating the occasion with photos of the proposal and her heartfelt “yes.”
The couple, parents to two daughters, Adara and Aitana, have now decided to tie the knot, solidifying a relationship that has been pivotal to the player's personal stability.
Araújo's Barcelona Career
The 25-year-old defender’s previous contract with Barcelona was set to expire in June 2026. However, his place in the starting lineup became uncertain as the pairing of Pau Cubarsí and Íñigo Martínez gained prominence during Araújo’s recovery from surgery on his right hamstring tendon.
The situation shifted when Íñigo Martínez sustained a muscle injury during the Spanish Super Cup final against Real Madrid, which Barcelona lost 2-5. Initially considering a move, with Juventus keen on securing him, Araújo ultimately decided to stay after discussions with Barcelona’s sporting director, Anderson Luis de Souza 'Deco'.
Araújo has extended his contract for six more years, ensuring his role as a key player for the club.
From Rising Talent to Barcelona’s Core
Joining Barcelona in 2018 from Boston River for €1.7 million (with potential add-ons of up to €5.2 million), Araújo debuted for the first team in October 2019. He became a regular starter during the 2021-22 season under Ronald Koeman and Xavi Hernández.
Despite being hindered by recurring muscle injuries, Araújo has made 154 appearances for Barcelona, scoring 8 goals and providing 6 assists. He has won two Spanish Super Cups, one Copa del Rey, and one La Liga title. As of summer 2024, he also serves as the team’s second captain.
Araújo recently returned to full fitness after a hamstring surgery in July, following an injury sustained during the Copa América. He resumed playing on January 4 in Barcelona’s Copa del Rey match against Barbastro.
Career Achievements
Since joining Barcelona’s B team, Araújo has steadily risen through the ranks. The defender has solidified his place as a cornerstone of the squad while representing Uruguay internationally since October 2020.
With his future at Barcelona secured, Ronald Araújo continues to be a vital figure for both the club and his national team.
