West Ham Coach Julen Lopetegui Injures Himself in Frustration
In this case, it wasn't a player who was injured, but the coach. Julen Lopetegui ended up leaving the stadium on crutches.
In a match, it's usually the players who suffer some sort of physical issue. However, in the third-round League Cup clash between West Ham United and Liverpool, it was Spanish manager Julen Lopetegui who sustained a muscle injury.
Visibly frustrated after his team missed a clear goal-scoring opportunity, Lopetegui jumped in anger on the sideline, which led to a calf injury.
The game ended in a 5-1 loss for West Ham, and the coach was forced to remain on the bench for the remainder of the match. He later limped into the post-game press conference.
The incident occurred after Crysencio Summerville missed a clear chance to score with the game standing at 3-1. "I've injured my calf," Lopetegui confirmed, and he was seen using crutches to move after the match, according to journalists at the game.
The Spanish coach has had a difficult start to the season with West Ham, as his team hasn’t won since late August and has lost three of their last four matches.
