José María Giménez, captain of the Uruguayan national team, stated that the Celeste players jumped into the stands and got involved in a fight with Colombian fans to defend their families, "who were in danger."

"We had to go into the stands to rescue our loved ones, with a tiny newborn baby. It was a disaster. There wasn't a single police officer, they showed up half an hour later. It was a mess, and we were there standing up for our own," said Giménez in statements after the Copa América semi-final, where Colombia defeated Uruguay (1-0).

After the match concluded, Giménez, along with Ronald Araújo, Darwin Núñez, and other Celeste players, jumped into the stands where there was a brawl between fans of both teams. Liverpool's striker was seen fighting with Colombian fans.

The Atlético Madrid defender explained that they were trying to protect their families who had come to watch the match. "I hope that those organizing this event take more care of the families, the people, and the surroundings of the stadiums because this is a disaster. The same thing happens in every match," he said.

"Our families are suffering because of those who drink too much alcohol and behave like children with no sense. I hope they take precautions and it doesn't happen again because this is a disaster," he added visibly upset.
