The Records Broken by the 2024 Copa América
The 2024 Copa América, held in the United States, shattered viewership records, especially in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and the host nation, attracting over 1.6 million spectators across its 32 matches, according to CONMEBOL.
The tournament, held from June 20 to July 14, featured ten South American teams and six from the Confederation of North, Central America, and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf). "We broke records in every metric we measure in terms of reach," stated Juan Emilio Roa, CONMEBOL's Commercial and Marketing Director.
South Americans Glued to Their Screens
CONMEBOL's statistics show that 84.6 million people watched the Copa América matches in Brazil, an 82% increase in viewership compared to 2021. In Argentina, the defending champions this year, the final had a 58.98% viewership. The semifinal between Argentina and Canada had a rating of 58.64%, matching the record of the 2022 World Cup final.
In Colombia, the runners-up of the Copa América, the final was the most-watched event, with a viewership of 28.4 points. The semifinal against Uruguay reached 25.5 points, with a 30% increase in viewership compared to the 2021 Copa América.
The match between Venezuela and Canada achieved a 54.25 rating in Venezuela, with a share of 90.85 points. In Uruguay, signal distribution covered 90% of households. In Chile, the match against Argentina was watched by 8.6 million viewers, with a 28.6 rating and 52% of the total audience.
Social Media and Spectator Numbers
More than 1.6 million spectators attended the 14 stadiums of the Copa América, 80% more than in the 2019 edition. The average stadium occupancy was 77%, with an average of 49,000 people per match.
The highest attendance for a football match this summer was the clash between Argentina and Chile, which drew 81.102 spectators. The USA-hosted tournament garnered 19 million social media followers, four times more than the 2021 edition.
Metrics indicate 207 million social media interactions, 1.8 million video views, and a brand exposure value for Copa América 2024 of $78.7 million.
