The Last Copa América for Messi?
Messi's and the Argentine National Team's last great challenge could come in the Copa America 2024, a competition where the former PSG star managed to overcome the burden of three lost finals and lead the national team to one of its most successful periods in history.
To repeat the feat achieved in 2021, Messi and his teammates will need to once again surpass a Brazil hungry for victories, being the only clear rival that could prevent the Argentine legend from celebrating his last title with the national team. But is this truly Messi's last major competition with the Albiceleste?
All signs point to yes, as after winning every possible title and accolade at both national and club levels, the Argentine legend is setting short-term goals. Although he does not completely rule out playing in the next World Cup, he states that "time passes for everyone."
"My goal is to arrive in good shape for the Copa America to be played in the United States. It will be exciting, we already went through the Centenary edition, which was very special, and we enjoyed the process. After the Copa America, we'll see, it depends on how I feel. Time passes for everyone, and I have to see how I am feeling day by day."
Messi went from resigning from the national team after losing three consecutive finals (2014 World Cup in Brazil, 2015 Copa America in Chile, and 2016 Copa America Centenario in the USA) to leading the national team to the pinnacle of world football by winning the Copa America against Brazil at the Maracanã and securing Argentina's third World Cup title. And now, all that's left is to sit back and enjoy the greatest footballer of all time.
