Ochoa and PSG: The Frustrated Transfer Due to a Piece of Meat
One of the major absences in the Copa América is undoubtedly Guillermo Ochoa, who dazzled everyone with his aerial prowess on the field in every major football event. But have you ever wondered why he never made it to a big European club? Spoiler alert: it was because of a piece of meat.
It was the year 2011, and Ochoa had everything set to join PSG, one of the best clubs in the world. However, a doping case involving clenbuterol within the Mexican national team caused his transfer to fall through.
This scandal, which had a significant impact on Mexican football, made headlines in the French press, preventing PSG from completing his signing, despite it being an "accident" as the substance was present in the meat consumed by the players.
"It could have been different. It happened in 2011, during the Gold Cup. We were in the preparation stage with the national team and knew nothing about clenbuterol, which is a substance injected into cows to fatten them up. It was unfair. It was something beyond my control and affected my career, my future. I could have signed with PSG; we had everything arranged," said a disappointed Ochoa, who could do nothing about an event beyond his control.
Nevertheless, this setback didn't stop the Mexican goalkeeper, who later joined Ajaccio, where he made historic saves and began his career in Europe. What could have been for Ochoa if he had joined the French giants?
