Messi Brings Di María to Tears
Lionel Messi made Ángel Di María cry in the talk that took place in the locker room prior to the Semifinal against Canada.
Argentina defeated Canada in the Copa América semifinals, giving Argentine fans a big reason to get excited about the chance to celebrate another title. However, there's also a mix of emotions—probably a blend of sadness and happiness—because Ángel Di María, one of Argentina's main stars, will retire from the national team this Sunday after the final.
After the 2-0 win against Canada in the semifinals, Ángel Di María shared his feelings in an interview about playing in another final and his last match with the national team. He was moved to tears by the words of his captain and friend, Lionel Messi, who gave an emotional speech before the game.
“I’m grateful to everyone who has always supported me, to my family, and to this group that has given me everything. Before we went out on the field, Leo (Messi) said he wanted to reach the final for me, and that filled me with pride. Having the chance to achieve everything I’ve achieved lately with all of them is a great honor for me,” Di María confessed.
“I think I can leave on a high note. I’ve done everything to leave on that high note. I gave everything to leave on that high note. I just work. I do the job I have to do. I always try to do my best. I’ve always given my all for this jersey. Sometimes it worked out for me. Lately, it started to work out,” said Ángel.
Di María also confirmed that this is a final decision, and there's no turning back; his last game with the national team will be the Copa América final on Sunday.
“I’m not ready for my last game with the national team, but it’s the right time. I dreamed of it this way, and it’s happening, reaching another final. My teammates already know there’s no turning back; it’s decided. They support my decision. They joke around, but it’s decided. Just one game left. It’s ending the way I dreamed, and it’s what I wanted… I feel I could continue, but I think this is the right moment. That’s it. I gave everything I had to give,” concluded the Argentine.
