Davinson Sanchez Urges Calm After Colombia’s Big Win Over USA
Center-back Davinson Sánchez downplayed the excitement following Colombia’s 5-1 victory over the United States, emphasizing that "the most important thing" is that the Colombian team is continuously improving ahead of the Copa América, which begins on June 20.
"Work. The accumulated hours are showing. I think Colombia is doing a great job in every game, even more so against a very good team, the host of the Copa América," he said after the friendly match. "It's always tough to come and play like that," he commented to Telemundo after the match in Maryland.
"But for us, it wasn't weird or strange to come, compete, and make a difference. The most important thing is that Colombia keeps growing, another test passed, and what we want is to make a difference in the actual competition," he added.
Colombia extended their impressive unbeaten streak to 22 matches with a 5-1 thrashing of the United States, with goals from Jhon Arias, Rafael Santos Borré, Richard Ríos, Jorge Carrascal, and Luis Sinisterra.
"There's always something to correct, but as a team, I think we've been improving with wins, and I always believe that being able to correct while winning helps, it gives you the peace of mind that you did many things well," Sánchez stated. He also acknowledged that there was a moment at 1-2 when the United States took the initiative, but highlighted that Colombia was "very patient" in securing the win with a decisive scoreline.
Sánchez praised the Colombian team’s accuracy and effectiveness in front of the goal. "It's something we've been emphasizing and working a lot on because we were creating chances but not being decisive," said the former Tottenham center-back.
"I think we also improved a lot in keeping the ball because, given our players, I think naturally when you have Luis Díaz and Luis Sinisterra, you want to go forward. But they also knew when it was time to play the ball and be Colombia," he concluded.
Colombia will now play their final preparation match for the Copa América against Bolivia.
