Daniel Muñoz Sees Colombia as a World Cup 2026 Finalist
Colombian defender Daniel Muñoz is confident that the Colombian national team, which was the runner-up in the Copa América held in the United States, has what it takes to reach the final of the 2026 World Cup after proving they can compete head-to-head with any opponent.
"This team is ready to play in the next World Cup final, and that's what we're aiming for. First, we need to qualify. Let's hope we can secure our spot this year; we have six matches, and if we play solid games, we can practically qualify for the World Cup," said Muñoz at a press conference in Medellín before a signing session.
For the defender, once Colombia secures a spot in the 2026 World Cup, they can "aim for the final." And win it. "We showed we could reach a final, and we did. Now we have to show we can reach a World Cup final and win it," he added.
The Crystal Palace player described the final in Miami against Argentina as a "dream final." "It was a dream for me, each of my teammates, and all of Colombia." Reflecting on his performance in the tournament, in which he scored two goals, he said he felt satisfied. "We can compete head-to-head with any national team, with any players. We have a lot of quality and talent," he said.
Learnings and his future
Muñoz regretted missing the final against Argentina due to his red card in the semifinal match against Uruguay. Now, he hopes to get another chance with the Colombian national team.
"It was sad not to be fighting in the final," said the defender, referring to the red card he received for reacting to a provocation from Uruguayan player Manuel Ugarte. "I can't turn back time; if I could, I might not have made that decision."
"I'm not making excuses; it was a mistake. I learn from it, and I think it makes me stronger, better, and perhaps gives me the maturity for the future. I know that greater things are coming for the national team. Maybe this wasn't the time for me to play in a final and be with my teammates, but I believe God has something bigger and better planned for us, and we're aiming for that World Cup," Muñoz said.
He expressed his satisfaction with his current situation at his club. "I'm very happy at Crystal Palace. I've been playing for four or five months. I'm not in a hurry to leave, but as I've always said, I work and focus on moving up a step whenever I get the chance. I'm not opposed to that. If a good opportunity comes along, I'm ready to take it," he concluded.
