The South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) "strongly" condemned acts of violence in football in a statement, although it avoided directly addressing the altercation between Uruguayan players and Colombian fans following the Copa America semifinal between both teams.

"There is no place for intolerance and violence on and off the field," Conmebol stated in their release.

Players such as Darwin Núñez, Ronald Araújo, and José María Giménez climbed into the stands to confront Colombian fans after Uruguay's 0-1 defeat in the semifinal held on Wednesday at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Giménez later stated in television interviews that the families of the Uruguayan players in the stands were "in danger" due to the actions of some Colombian fans.

"Conmebol strongly condemns any act of violence affecting football," the statement continued.

"We invite everyone in the remaining days to pour all their passion into supporting their teams and to have an unforgettable celebration," Conmebol added.

Prior to the altercation with fans and after the match concluded, there was also a significant brawl between players from both teams in the center of the field.
