Paraguay's border crossings were packed this Saturday morning with fans of Racing and Cruzeiro waiting to enter the country to attend the Copa Sudamericana final, set to take place in a few hours at the General Pablo Rojas Stadium, "La Nueva Olla," in Asunción.
Lines of buses and fans wearing the colors of the Belo Horizonte team were visible at the Ciudad del Este border checkpoint, a town bordering Brazil located about 320 kilometers from the Paraguayan capital.
According to ABC TV, in addition to buses carrying organized fan groups, there were also tourist vehicles filled with Brazilian supporters, exceeding the expectations of local authorities.
At the José Falcón border crossing, which neighbors the Argentine city of Clorinda, lines of Racing fans were also observed. Many of them told ABC TV that they had been waiting since the early hours of the morning to pass through the checkpoint.
This crossing point between the two countries is about an hour’s drive from Asunción.
As of 8:00 a.m. local time (11:00 GMT), the National Directorate of Migrations reported the arrival of 32,834 tourists to Paraguay, of whom 26,722 were Argentine, 5,572 Brazilian, and 540 from other nationalities.
Paraguayan authorities have set up a security operation involving 7,000 police officers in Asunción and the deployment of military personnel at "critical" points, particularly the teams' hotels and areas where buses and vehicles with fans have been stationed. Many fans spent the night in La Costanera, a scenic avenue along the Paraguay River.
