Brazilian club Corinthians announced the signing of forward Memphis Depay, one of the top goal scorers in Dutch national team history. Depay has been secured with a two-and-a-half-year contract.
The 30-year-old striker, expected to arrive at the São Paulo club later this week, signed the deal on Monday in the Netherlands, which will keep him at Corinthians until December 2026, as reported by the club on their social media.
Although the club did not disclose the exact transfer value, sports media sources claim it amounts to approximately 70 million Brazilian reais (about $12.5 million), including salaries, bonuses, and incentives over the 28-month contract.
Depay, who has scored 46 goals in 98 appearances for the Dutch national team, joins Corinthians after playing the last season with Atlético Madrid in Spain.
The forward began his professional career at PSV Eindhoven and has also played for Manchester United, Lyon, and Barcelona.
Depay competed in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and scored one of the goals in the victory over Chile, which was held at Arena Corinthians, the home stadium of his new club.
The attacker, who is the first Dutch player in the history of the most popular club in São Paulo, is also a rapper and even has a song named after Corinthians.
Depay is expected to be a key goal-scoring hope for Corinthians as the team aims to climb the Campeonato Brasileiro standings and avoid relegation. The São Paulo club is currently in 17th place with 25 points, 25 points behind the leaders, Botafogo.
