Goodbye Ghosts: Boca Juniors Ends Losing Streak Against Independiente del Valle
Boca Juniors beat Independiente del Valle by a narrow margin and qualified for the round of 16 of the Copa Sudamericana.
The "Xeneize" team secured a spot in the Round of 16 of the 2024 Copa Sudamericana after defeating Independiente del Valle 1-0 at La Bombonera. Not only did they clinch victory and qualification, but they also broke a bad streak that had plagued them since 2020.
What Boca managed to overcome was a streak of failing to defeat their opponents within the 90 minutes of regular time in a knockout stage match. This negative run had haunted the Argentine team since 2020, when Boca defeated Racing in the Quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores.
In that Libertadores match, Eduardo Salvio and Sebastián Villa were the main authors of the comeback at La Bombonera, winning 2-1 against Racing and advancing to the next phase. Later, they were eliminated by Santos with a 3-0 loss in Brazil.
Believe it or not, Boca reached the final of the 2023 Copa Libertadores without a single victory in regular time during the entire knockout stage. They drew both matches against Nacional and advanced, and the same happened against Palmeiras, leading to the final where they were defeated by Fluminense at the Maracanã Stadium.
With this victory against Independiente del Valle, Boca broke a bad streak that caused fear among fans and players. They can now breathe a sigh of relief as they prepare to face Cruzeiro in the Round of 16 of the Sudamericana.
