Cavani Misses Crucial Clash Against Cruzeiro: Boca Juniors Loses Its "Matador"
Uruguayan striker for Boca Juniors, Edinson Cavani, will miss the second leg of the Copa Sudamericana Round of 16 match against Brazilian club Cruzeiro due to a muscle tear, as reported by the Argentine club.
The 'Xeneize' shared the medical report on their social media, indicating that 'the Matador' suffered a grade II muscle injury in his left soleus, which could sideline him for three weeks.
The injury comes at a delicate moment, as the auriazul side secured a narrow 1-0 win in the first leg, thanks to a goal from the Salto-born player. Therefore, they need at least a draw in Belo Horizonte to secure a direct pass to the quarterfinals.
Cavani's presence in Diego Martínez's starting lineup for Thursday's match had been all but certain.
The player had already rested this past weekend and was not called up for the match against San Lorenzo, which ended in a 3-2 victory, due to some discomfort. However, according to local sports media, during Tuesday's training session, he suffered the aforementioned injury.
The team from La Ribera resumed training at Boca's Ezeiza complex (Buenos Aires Province) on Wednesday morning, this time under heavy rain, before heading to Belo Horizonte.
The winner of the Boca Juniors vs. Cruzeiro series will face the winner of the Paraguayan matchup between Libertad and Sportivo Ameliano.
