Botafogo Knocks Out Palmeiras in a CRAZY Copa Libertadores Match
Botafogo pulled off a stunning upset in the Round of 16 of the CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores, eliminating heavy favorites Palmeiras in a wild match that saw Botafogo secure a 2-2 draw on the road, winning 3-2 on aggregate.
Botafogo opened the scoring in the 58th minute with a goal from Igor Jesus, capping off a collective play that started with a throw-in. Just seven minutes later, Jefferson Savarino doubled the lead in the 65th minute with a clinical counterattack, making it 0-2.
Palmeiras, however, fought back, finding a glimmer of hope with a goal in the 87th minute and then leveling the match 2-2 through Rony, giving the fans a moment of optimism. They even managed to score what seemed to be the 3-2 winner, but VAR intervened, disallowing the goal that would have forced penalties, sealing Palmeiras' defeat and exit from the tournament.
With this result, Botafogo advances to the Quarterfinals of the CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores, where they will face the winner of São Paulo vs Nacional (currently 0-0 on aggregate). Palmeiras, missing Endrick, bids farewell to the tournament.
