Peñarol Wins but Gets Knocked Out by Botafogo in Libertadores Semifinals
Peñarol pulled off a home win against Botafogo in the second leg of the CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores semifinal, finishing 3-1 with two goals from Jaime Báez and one from Bautista. However, the 6-3 aggregate score still favored Botafogo, sending Peñarol out of the tournament.
In the first half, Peñarol showed why they’re six-time Libertadores champs. They came out like a freight train, racking up 16 shots and finally breaking through in the 31st minute with a strike from Jaime Báez, putting them ahead by halftime.
Facing a four-goal deficit, Peñarol kept the pressure up in the second half and got their second goal in the 66th minute—another from Báez. But Botafogo sealed the deal in the 88th with a goal from Almada. Peñarol managed one last strike in the 89th from Bautista, but it wasn’t enough, and they lost on aggregate.
With this result, Peñarol is eliminated, while Botafogo heads to its first-ever Copa Libertadores final, where they’ll face fellow Brazilians Atlético Mineiro, who are chasing their second Libertadores title on November 30, 2024.
