Botafogo Crushes Peñarol in Libertadores Semifinals
Botafogo put on a show and dominated Peñarol with a 5-0 victory in the first leg of the CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores semifinals at Nilton Santos Stadium. Jefferson Savarino scored twice, while Luiz Henrique, Alexander Barboza, and Igor Jesus also found the net.
All the goals came in the second half, where Botafogo really turned up the heat. It all started in the 51st minute when Savarino scored, and just four minutes later, he doubled his tally in the 54th minute.
With a two-goal deficit, Peñarol's defense crumbled, giving away a ball that Luiz Henrique expertly chipped over the keeper, Aguerre, in the 73rd minute. Then, just six minutes later, in the 79th minute, Botafogo’s star striker sealed the deal, making it 5-0.
With this result, Botafogo will head to Peñarol for the return leg of the semifinals, where the Uruguayan team will be looking for a historic comeback to chase their sixth title, while the Brazilians will defend their lead in hopes of securing their first-ever Copa Libertadores trophy.
