What We Know About Fernando Gago’s Potential Move to Boca Juniors
One of the most popular teams in Mexico, Chivas de Guadalajara, might soon be without their head coach, as rumors from Argentina suggest that Fernando Gago is close to signing with Boca Juniors. In fact, it’s already being reported as a done deal in the South American country.
According to ESPN Argentina, Boca Juniors president, Juan Román Riquelme, has already made contact with Gago to let him know that he’s one of the main candidates for the coaching position. It's worth noting that Gago is no stranger to Boca Juniors, as he was once a player for the club.
When would Fernando Gago’s last match with Chivas be?
Reports indicate that Gago aims to coach the *Clásico Tapatío* against Atlas, after which he will end his tenure with Chivas and is expected to be presented as Boca Juniors’ new coach next Wednesday.
Currently, Guadalajara is ranked eighth in the general standings with 15 points. In his first tournament in charge of the team, Gago led them to the semifinals, where they lost to their archrival América, who went on to become the Liga MX champions.
How much does Boca Juniors need to pay to bring Gago?
The Argentine coach has a contract with Chivas until May 2025. If Boca Juniors wants to sign him, they will have to pay around one million dollars to secure his services. This isn’t expected to be an issue, as Gago is considered a long-term coaching solution in Argentina.
If he joins, the former Boca player will face the challenge of leading the team through the quarterfinals of the Argentine Cup, securing qualification for the next Copa Libertadores through the annual standings, and building a competitive squad for the upcoming 2025 FIFA Club World Cup to be held in the United States.
