VIDEO | Libertadores 2024 Highlights:: Palmeiras vs San Lorenzo
San Lorenzo de Almagro qualified for the Round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores this Thursday with a goalless draw at Palmeiras' home, in an emotional match marked by Endrick's farewell, who bid farewell to his fans before heading to Real Madrid.
The Argentine team managed to neutralize Endrick, Estevão, and Luís Guilherme, Palmeiras' three most prized jewels, and secured a crucial point to qualify as the second team in Group F, with 8 points, on a cold night at Allianz Parque in São Paulo.
Independiente del Valle's victory over Liverpool of Montevideo (2-1) was in vain. The Ecuadorians finished third with 7 points and will have to play the playoff for the Copa Sudamericana.
Palmeiras, vying for the best performance in the group stage, finished top of the group with 14 points and no defeats.
The verdiblanco team was far below their level, lacking tension until the final stretch of the match, perhaps overwhelmed by Endrick's departure, who broke into tears during the ceremonial greetings while the fans displayed a tifo with a message: "See you later."
In the stands, there were many banners, some humorous: "Endrick will be the only ex I'll miss," read one.
On the field, there was very little football until the final minutes. The São Paulo team initially relied heavily on long balls to their three young forwards.
San Lorenzo needed just a draw to advance to the Round of 16 and chose to be cautious at the back. Romaña and Luján were a constant nuisance for Endrick, who desperately and vehemently asked for a penalty.
The Almagro team barely approached the rival area but had a clear opportunity in the first half after a run by Bareiro that ended with Eric Remedi shooting too high.
The home team's danger came mainly from set pieces. In one of them, Paraguayan Gustavo Gómez had a goal disallowed for a narrow offside.
In the second half, the pace remained slow. Leguizamón, who has a powerful shot, almost surprised Weverton with a very distant free-kick.
At the other end, a poor clearance by Facundo Altamirano almost turned into a goal by Estevão, who shot at the Argentine goalkeeper's body.
Abel Ferreira added more firepower with the introduction of 'Flaco' López and Rony. Endrick also became more active with a sombrero and a nutmeg on an opponent. The number 9, who will now play in the Copa América with the Canarinha, had a scare in a collision with Cuello but it wasn't serious.
To prevent any further issues, the future Real Madrid player was substituted in the 70th minute and went straight to the locker room.
There were also more spaces for the Argentine team. Cuello headed a cross from Leguizamón and almost stunned Allianz Parque.
In the final minutes, Leandro Romagnoli's team started to show signs of wear. Campi almost scored an own goal and Altamirano was very alert to block a header from Murilo, but San Lorenzo held on to qualify for the Round of 16 with determination.
