VIDEO | Libertadores 2024 Highlights: Flamengo vs Millonarios
Flamengo thrashed Millonarios 3-0 on Tuesday, with a brace from Pedro and an own goal by Vargas, allowing the Brazilian team to advance to the round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores as the second place in Group E.
Despite ending the match with ten players due to Bruno Henrique's expulsion, the most popular club in Brazil faced little resistance at Maracanã from a Colombian side that arrived in Rio de Janeiro already eliminated, finishing the group stage last with only 3 points.
The Rio club amassed 10 points, thanks in large part to big wins in their last two matches. However, these victories were not enough to unseat Bolivian club Bolívar from the top spot. Bolívar advanced to the round of 16 as the group leader with 13 points after defeating Chilean club Palestino 3-1 on Tuesday.
With strong support from their fans at Maracanã, the team led by former Brazil national coach Tite clearly dominated the first half, controlling 64% of possession and recording four shots on goal compared to none from Millonarios.
Flamengo’s superiority was also aided by Colombian errors.
Pedro opened the scoring in the 7th minute, capitalizing on a defensive mistake by Millonarios and a lapse by goalkeeper Álvaro Montero on a back pass.
Twenty minutes later, after a ball launched into the area by David Luiz and a shot by Gerson, Juan Pablo Vargas inadvertently fooled Montero, scoring an own goal while trying to clear the ball.
At the end of the first half, after an assist from Uruguayan Matías Viña, Pedro scored Flamengo's third goal, controlling the ball in the area and shooting it into the corner of Montero's net. The referee initially disallowed the goal, citing offside, but ultimately validated it after consulting the VAR.
Despite the sizable lead, the Brazilian club maintained heavy pressure in the second half. Just a minute in, Pedro nearly scored his third goal with a bicycle kick following an assist from Uruguayan Guillermo Varela, but Montero was well-positioned to prevent it.
Everton 'Cebolinha' also came close to scoring a spectacular goal in the 14th minute of the second half, dodging several opponents before hitting the post.
In an attempt to respond, Millonarios' embattled coach, Alberto Gamero, introduced attackers Carvajal and Quiñones, which helped the Colombian team create some chances and lessen Flamengo's dominance.
Tite also leveled the playing field somewhat by substituting Uruguayans Giorgian de Arrascaeta and Nicolás de la Cruz, his main playmakers.
However, Millonarios failed to capitalize, even after Bruno Henrique was sent off for a violent foul on Paredes.
