VIDEO | Libertadores 2024 Highlights: Atlético Mineiro vs Peñarol
Atlético Mineiro maintain a perfect record in the Copa Libertadores after defeating Peñarol (3-1) on Matchday 3 of the Group Stage.
Brazilian side maintains unbeaten record with a perfect start after three wins in the first three rounds of Group G, which is completed by Caracas and Rosario Central, who drew 1-1 in Venezuela.
The match at the Arena MRV had to be stopped for a few moments due to a brawl between fans of both teams that forced the police to intervene. The tension was also evident on the pitch, and even Milito ended up arguing with some Peñarol players.
The Belo Horizonte team, in search of their second Libertadores title, took advantage of the Uruguayan team's gifts to cement a victory that almost slipped away after going 3-0 up.
Gustavo Scarpa, with a brace, and Paulinho put some distance between the two teams, but the "Aurinegros" reacted in the second half with goals from Maxi Olivera and Maxi Silvera, and were on the verge of snatching a draw.
Peñarol are left with three points in the group and very little margin for error if they want to advance to the next round. They now face Rosario Central, who have four points, and Caracas, who are bottom with just one.
Diego Aguirre's side barely existed in the first half, outplayed on all fronts by the Brazilians. Paulinho, Zaracho, and Alan Franco were the first to put the opposing defense under pressure.
However, it was Scarpa who laid the first stone of the victory. The former Nottingham Forest player finished with a masterclass a good cross from Paulinho inside the box.
Peñarol continued to struggle and ten minutes later gifted 'Galo' with the second goal, after a mistake by midfielder Damián García.
The U-20 world champion with Uruguay took a goal kick, drove outside the box and, surrounded by Paulinho and Hulk, gave the ball away to the former, who entered the box and finished past Guillermo de Amores.
Before the ball went into the net, García already had his hands on his face, aware of his mistake.
The second half started equally badly for the visitors.
De Amores saved a one-on-one with Paulinho. Zaracho hit the crossbar and Scarpa was again the most accurate with his second goal in his personal tally, a carbon copy of the first, this time from a pass by Hulk.
After the third goal, Peñarol woke up and believed in a comeback with Olivera's header, which met a teammate's chilena cross, and Silvera's goal after a good collective play.
In just eight minutes they had put themselves back in the game. And they still had twenty minutes left to complete the comeback. Gastón Ramírez had a chance, but his long-range free kick hit the post.
But Mineiro knew how to weather the storm and hold on to three points that leave them one step away from the round of 16.
