The Stadium That Will Host The 2024 Libertadores Final
The Monumental Stadium, home of River Plate, will host the final of the Copa Libertadores on November 30, 2024, as announced by the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) on Friday.
"The decisive match for the Eternal Glory will take place on Saturday, November 30, 2024, at one of the most iconic venues in South American football," said CONMEBOL in a statement from its headquarters in Luque, Paraguay.
The Monumental was chosen for its modern infrastructure, rich sporting history, and its capacity to accommodate the large number of fans who support the current semifinalist clubs. The stadium can hold more than 84,000 spectators.
Earlier this year, it was announced that the Argentine capital would host the final of the South American tournament, which held its first edition in 1960 under the name Copa de Campeones de América. Other possible venues considered included the Estadio Libertadores de América, home of Club Atlético Independiente, and the Estadio Único Diego Armando Maradona.
Since 2019, when the title of South America's premier club competition shifted to a single-match format, Argentina has not hosted any finals. The last Libertadores final held in the capital was the controversial 2018 clash between eternal rivals River Plate and Boca Juniors, which had to be resolved in Madrid.
The first leg was delayed due to flooding at Boca Juniors' La Bombonera stadium, and the return match was moved to Europe after River fans attacked the Boca bus near the Núñez stadium.
Since then, CONMEBOL has awarded the organization of the Libertadores final to Lima, Rio de Janeiro (twice), Montevideo, and Guayaquil (Ecuador).
With 25 titles, Argentina is the country that has won the Copa Libertadores the most times, followed by Brazil (23) and Uruguay (8).
