Gabigol to Leave Flamengo at the End of the Year
Gabriel Barbosa, known as "Gabigol," has confirmed that he will be leaving Flamengo at the end of this season. After winning the Copa do Brasil with the team, he revealed that the final against Atlético Mineiro would be his "last final" with the Rio-based club.
"I’m not staying at Flamengo. This was my last final," Gabigol told Globo TV following the match, amid chants of "stay" from Flamengo fans.
The 28-year-old striker admitted that his performance this season hadn’t lived up to expectations but attributed it to a doping case that sidelined him for a month and to the "attitude of a coach" who "didn’t respect him," referring to former coach Tite, who managed the team until late September.
Gabigol regained his form and confidence under new coach Filipe Luís, who replaced Tite and led the team to a 3-1 victory over Mineiro in the first leg of the final, with Gabigol scoring twice. Gabigol, who joined Flamengo in 2019, was part of the team that won both the Brazilian Championship and the Copa Libertadores that same year. While he hasn’t revealed his next destination, local sources suggest he may be heading to Cruzeiro, which had previously expressed interest in signing him.
