Cafú, Tévez, Neymar... Marcelo Aims to Join the List of Stars with 'Champions' and Libertadores
Marcelo boasts about 30 titles in his illustrious career, with five Champions League titles standing out. However, he is yet to add the Copa Libertadores to his collection, and this Saturday, he has the opportunity to fill that void while wearing the jersey of the club where he was born, Fluminense.
If he lifts the trophy in the Maracanã sky, the 35-year-old full-back will join the exclusive club of footballers who have achieved both the UEFA Champions League and the Copa Libertadores, the two most prestigious club titles. Only thirteen players have accomplished this feat in the over 60-year history of these South American and European competitions, with nine being Brazilians and four Argentinians. Notably, legends like Pelé and Maradona are absent from this list.
⚽️🏆 The Copa Libertadores 2023 FINAL will be on beIN SPORTS this Saturday, November 4th, starting at 3:30 PM ET / 12:30 PM PT. Don't miss out! ⚽️🏆
The most recent to achieve this was Julián Álvarez. The talented Argentine forward won the Libertadores with River Plate in 2018 and the 'Champions' with Manchester City last year. He already possesses five Champions League titles with Real Madrid, making him one of the footballers with the most continental titles in history, alongside his generational peers at Real Madrid (Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Casemiro, Luka Modric, Toni Kroos...). However, the Libertadores still eludes him.
Furthermore, if Marcelo scores a goal, he will join Neymar as the only players to have scored in finals of both tournaments. The Brazilian number 10 accomplished this with Santos against Peñarol in 2011 and with Barcelona against Juventus in 2015. Marcelo has already covered half of that journey, as he scored in extra time during the final of the 'Decima' Champions League for Real Madrid against Atlético Madrid in 2014.
