Botafogo Beats São Paulo in Penalties, Advances to Copa Libertadores Semifinals
São Paulo and Botafogo drew in regular time, taking the match to a penalty shootout where Botafogo emerged victorious in the second leg of the CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores Quarterfinals. The game ended 1-1, but Botafogo sealed it by winning the shootout 5-4 at São Paulo's home.
In the first half, Botafogo took the lead early with a goal from World Cup winner Thiago Almada in the 15th minute. They held onto the lead going into halftime, especially after ex-PSG player Lucas Moura missed a penalty in the 45+5’ minute, sending the ball into the stands at Morumbi.
In the second half, São Paulo, backed by their home crowd, pushed hard to avoid losing in regular time. They found the equalizer through a great header by Jonathan Calleri in the 87th minute, forcing the match into penalties.
In the shootout, São Paulo started off on the wrong foot, missing their first penalty. Botafogo also slipped up with Vitinho missing their fourth shot, sending it to sudden death. In the end, Rodrigo Nestor missed for São Paulo, while Matheus Martins stepped up and scored the winning penalty for Botafogo.
With this result, Botafogo moves on to the CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores Semifinals, eliminating their fellow Brazilians São Paulo. They now await the winner of the Flamengo vs Peñarol matchup.
