Atlético Mineiro vs Botafogo: An All-Brazilian Final in the 2024 Copa Libertadores
After the CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores semifinals wrapped up, we have our Grand Final set: Atlético Mineiro will take on Botafogo in an all-Brazilian showdown on November 30, 2024, in Buenos Aires for the 60th edition of the tournament.
“El Galo” on the Hunt for a Second Title
Atlético Mineiro has reached its second-ever Libertadores final, with their last appearance (and victory) dating back to 2013, when they took down Olimpia, led by the legendary Ronaldinho, to clinch their first Libertadores trophy.
This time around, Atlético Mineiro’s journey has them looking like strong favorites. They topped their group, took out San Lorenzo in the Round of 16, then knocked off last year’s champions, Fluminense with stars Marcelo and Thiago Silva, and finished it off by eliminating River Plate, Gallardo’s powerhouse squad.
Botafogo’s Path to Their First Final
Botafogo has taken everyone by surprise this season, first by dominating the “Brasileirão,” where they currently hold the top spot, and then making waves in the Libertadores with their Brazilian national team duo, Igor Jesus and Luiz Henrique.
Although their start was a bit rocky as they finished second in their group, they turned it around in the knockout stages, showing why they’re considered Brazil’s top team right now. In the Round of 16, they knocked out tournament favorites Palmeiras, then eliminated fellow Brazilian team São Paulo in a dramatic penalty shootout, and finally, secured their spot in the final by defeating the six-time Libertadores champs, Uruguayan giant Peñarol.
