After an Epic Welcome, the Monumental Stadium Gets Shut Down!
River Plate’s stadium was shut down due to unauthorized use of fireworks by the ‘millonarios’ fans during Tuesday’s match against Atlético Mineiro, as they fought for a spot in the Copa Libertadores final, according to official sources.
The City of Buenos Aires’ Government Control Agency (AGC) imposed an administrative closure on the “Más Monumental” stadium for violating the permitted use of pyrotechnics. “Fireworks were authorized by the Football Committee in a specific area...for a set time, but that wasn’t followed, as they were launched all over the stadium,” the AGC explained in a statement.
Government control officials also said that an inspection by the police and AGC agents on Tuesday night uncovered 3,648 flares stored in a disabled bathroom.
“With the closure ordered by the Control Agency, the courts will now determine the penalties, and the Public Prosecutor’s Office, along with CONMEBOL, is also involved,” the statement added.
Club sources reported that they have been working to lift the closure since being notified, stating that only the stadium is closed for matches but that members and visitors can still access other facilities. During the game, where River needed at least three goals to even the score, their fans welcomed the team with a massive light and red smoke show that filled the entire stadium.
Unfortunately, the fans' passion wasn’t enough for Marcelo Gallardo’s squad to pull off the miracle—they ended up with a 0-0 draw and were knocked out of the tournament. On top of this, the stadium shutdown means the club now has to file a presentation in Buenos Aires court and pay a “significant fine.”
