Xabi Alonso's Surprising Confession
The coach of the unstoppable Bayer Leverkusen gave an interview in which he revealed a detail about his past that could have changed everything.
The coach of Bayer Leverkusen, Xabi Alonso, said in an interview with the club's magazine, "Werkelf," that for a long time he hadn't considered a career in professional football, so while playing for Real Sociedad, he continued studying at university.
"I was studying and at the same time, seeing how far I could go in football," he said.
He continued his studies at university even until he was transferred to Liverpool at 22. "I was only one course away from finishing Economics," he explained.
"Without the signing, I would have followed the same path as my friends and looked for a job in the economy. That was the plan in case I didn't succeed in football, and I had no problem with that," he added.
What came after is well known. Xabi Alonso played for Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich, winning titles with both his clubs and the Spanish national team, with which he won the European Championship and the World Cup.
Leverkusen is his first stop as a coach in top-flight professional football, and he is on the verge of giving the team its first Bundesliga title in history.
Furthermore, Leverkusen is in the final of the German Cup and in the quarterfinals of the Europa League and is undefeated in all competitions.
