Van Dijk's Favorites to Win the Euro
Virgil Van Dijk, the Netherlands' stalwart defender, identified France, Germany, Portugal, and England as the strongest teams heading into Euro 2024. Speaking on Saturday, Van Dijk emphasized that while these teams are formidable, many factors will play a crucial role in determining the tournament's outcome.
"Germany left a strong impression. We faced them in the last international break. They have players capable of making a difference. The red card didn't help Scotland, but Germany's level is very high," Van Dijk noted during a press conference in Hamburg, where the Netherlands will begin their campaign against Poland on Sunday.
Reflecting on the importance of fan support, he added, "Our fans are incredible. We need them in good times and bad. There were fewer in Qatar than we expect now. We must stay united, not just with the eleven players but with everyone, if we want to achieve something special."
Van Dijk also praised the talent of Xavi Simons while acknowledging his potential for further growth. "I have confidence in him," he concluded.
