Turkish Drama: Soyuncu to Miss Euro 2024
Turkish international defender Caglar Soyuncu, on loan from Atletico Madrid to Fenerbahce Istanbul this season, has been dropped from the national team squad for the upcoming Euro 2024 in Germany due to an injury, the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) announced on Thursday.
According to an announcement on the TFF website, Soyuncu suffered a thigh muscle injury during Fenerbahce's Super Lig match against Istanbulspor last Sunday, ruling him out for at least three weeks.
This injury is considered a significant loss for the Turkish national team, as Soyuncu played a key role in the defense, and his absence may require changes in the team's defensive strategy, reports the Turkish sports press.
Turkey will play in Group F of Euro 2024, which includes the Czech Republic, Georgia, and Portugal.
The Turks' first match will be against Georgia on June 18, and their last on June 26 against the Czech Republic.
Until June 3, the Turkish national team will train in Istanbul before flying to Bologna for a friendly match against Italy on June 4.
After another friendly, against Poland on June 10, the Turkish team will finally move to Germany and continue their preparations in Barsinghausen, in northern Germany, where they will stay throughout the tournament.
