At just 19, Marc Cucalón has been compelled to make one of the toughest decisions of his life: saying goodbye to professional soccer. This heartbreaking news comes after two years of battling a bacterial infection that complicated his recovery from a torn ligament in his right knee, sustained in September 2022. 

It all began during a UEFA Youth League match when a rival tackle resulted in the dreaded ligament rupture. A serious injury, yes, but typically one that allows for recovery and a return to the field after a lengthy rehabilitation process. However, in Cucalón’s case, a bacteria entered during surgery, leading to a rare and painful infection that damaged the cartilage in his knee, making any return to soccer impossible.

Cucalón did not give up right away. For two years, he fought to overcome the issue, undergoing multiple treatments and sacrificing both body and mind in search of a recovery that never arrived. "I have fought with all my strength," the young player wrote in his letter, lamenting how the bacteria affected his physical health and even his ability to perform moderate exercise. Faced with medical results, Cucalón accepted that, for his well-being, retirement was unavoidable.

For La Fábrica, this loss is significant. Known for his vision, leadership, and similarities to Xabi Alonso, Cucalón was seen as one of Real Madrid's midfield stars in the making.
