Piqué's Praise for Guardiola: "He Even Changed the Language"
In an interview with Corriere dello Sport, Gerard Piqué looked back on key moments of his career, reflected on influential figures such as Pep Guardiola and Lionel Messi, and shared his vision for the future of football, from the Kings League to the Super League.
Guardiola and the Golden Era of Barça
Piqué fondly recalled his time under Pep Guardiola, with whom he coincided during the start of an iconic cycle at FC Barcelona. “The talent in that team was incredible, but the combination with Pep is what made it extraordinary. We knew each other from La Masia; there was a natural connection. Following Pep’s model was easy for us,” he said.
The former defender highlighted Guardiola’s tactical brilliance and ability to inspire the team: “He’s an exceptional strategist, capable of reading games and providing all the necessary tools. His ability to keep the group focused for years, even by changing his approach, is unmatched.”
Messi vs. Cristiano: Two Legends, One Extraterrestrial
Piqué did not hesitate to name Lionel Messi as the best player he has ever seen: “Messi was always different, an extraterrestrial. Cristiano is the best among humans, but Leo is on another level. I watched him train daily, doing incredible things. There will never be another like him.”
The Kings League and Its Future
The former player also discussed the growth of the Kings League, an innovative project gaining popularity: “We are growing little by little. I don’t know where we’ll be in five years, but we’re putting all our passion into conquering every country we reach. Italy will be our next destination.”
When asked about his relationship with Florentino Pérez and the Super League, Piqué remarked: “Florentino is powerful and continues to fight for his project. We are following our own path with the Kings League. They are different projects, but both aim to revolutionize football.”
Juventus and His Goodbye as a Player
Piqué revealed that he was close to signing with Juventus in 2007 before returning to Barça from Manchester United. However, his career led him to become a cornerstone of the Catalan team. On a possible return to football in another role, he stated: “Maybe I’ll return to football in the future, but not as a coach. After 20 years of routine, I needed a break.”
Now, Gerard Piqué enjoys his new life as a businessman and leader of innovative projects, while making it clear that his love for football remains as strong as ever.
