Militao Out for the Season: A Devastating Blow for Real Madrid
Éder Militao's season came to an abrupt end during Saturday's match against Osasuna, as he suffered a "complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament with involvement of both menisci in the right knee," marking his second major knee injury in just 15 months. Last season, he endured a similar fate with his left knee.
The Real Madrid Medical Services confirmed the severity of Militao's injury today. "Following tests carried out today on our player Éder Militão by Real Madrid's Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament with involvement of both menisci in the right knee. Militão will undergo surgery in the coming days," the club stated on its website.
The injury occurred 27 minutes into the game as Militao went up for a header from a set piece and his knee painfully locked, causing him to fall to the ground in evident agony. His teammates quickly signaled for medical attention, and the Brazilian defender was stretchered off the field.
Militao previously suffered a severe knee injury on the first matchday of last season, August 12 at San Mamés, and only returned from a torn ACL in his left knee on March 31, also against Athletic in a league match.
Now, sources from Real Madrid, as reported by EFE, expect Militao to be sidelined for up to nine months, considering the additional damage to the menisci.
This long-term absence, compounded by the serious knee injuries to teammates Dani Carvajal and David Alaba—the latter nearing a return after an injury in December 2023—leaves Real Madrid's defense critically short. Additionally, Lucas Vázquez also exited the Osasuna match with a muscle injury, with further updates on his condition expected within the next 48 hours.
