Mbappé to Become Owner of a Football Club
The purchase by Coalition Capital, owned by Kylian Mbappé, of the football club SM Caen, from the French second division, has passed the final hurdle to become effective: the green light from the National Directorate of Management Control (DNCG), the financial supervisor of French clubs.
According to French media reports this Wednesday, the DNCG implicitly gave its authorization by refraining from intervening after the change of ownership, which means that 80% of Caen's shares have shifted from the American fund Oaktree Capital to Coalition Capital.
The transaction was announced at the end of July by the club itself, which did not provide details about the purchase price at that time. According to the press, Mbappé's fund investment is around 15-20 million euros.
The current star of Real Madrid, at 25 years old, has thus become one of the few active footballers to own a club, like his national teammate N'Golo Kanté, who owns one in Belgium.
The forward, raised in Bondy, has a long-standing relationship with Caen, as he was close to signing with them in 2012 when he was only 13 years old; however, this option did not materialize due to French regulations on signing such young players.
A year later, when he was no longer subject to those administrative obstacles, Caen had dropped to the second division, and the player’s family opted for Monaco, where he stayed until he was transferred to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in 2017.
Caen, which finished last season in sixth place in the French second division (Ligue 2), is a club that has traditionally focused on youth development and nurturing young players.
