Maldini Surname Returns to Italy National Team After 22 Years
Italian national team coach Luciano Spalletti has called up Daniel Maldini, a player from Monza, for the first time in his career, a decision that brings the legendary Maldini surname back to the 'Azzurra' after a 22-year absence.
Daniel will be the third Maldini to wear the Italian jersey, following in the footsteps of his father, Paolo, and his grandfather, Cesare, both of whom played as defenders, a position that Daniel, a forward, does not share.
This call-up comes more than 22 years after Paolo's last appearance on June 18, 2002, and 61 years after Cesare, who last played in 1963.
Daniel is not the only newcomer on the list; goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio (Juventus), center-back Matteo Gabbia (Milan), and young midfielder Niccolò Pisilli (Roma) have also received their first call-ups.
Italy will face Belgium on October 10 at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome and Israel on October 14 at the BluEnergy Stadium in Udine as part of the Nations League.
The Italian squad will gather on Sunday in Coverciano (Florence) and will move to Rome on the afternoon of Wednesday, October 9. After the match against Belgium, the team will return to Coverciano and then travel to Udine on Sunday, the day before the game against Israel.
