Llorente Criticized for Comment on Sun and Skin Cancer
Strong criticism for the Atlético de Madrid player after his statements about the sun and skin cancer.
Marcos Llorente is facing strong backlash after posting on Instagram about his outdoor routine in Hawaii, where he was shown in the sun without sunscreen or sunglasses. He mentioned that he sunbathed from 10 AM to 2 PM.
In response to the criticism, Llorente made a controversial comment that further angered users: “If you think skin cancer is caused by the sun, you’re the king of ignorants,” he stated.
This remark led to numerous public and user comments expressing their disapproval.
“Marcos Llorente, football player and melanoma denier. What a time to be alive,” declared Madrid's Secretary of State for Health, Javier Padilla.
These were not the only negative comments directed at the Atlético Madrid player: “Melanoma denier. Didn’t see that one coming... good thing you’re good at football”; “How can you say on social media that it’s okay to sunbathe from 10 to 2 without sunscreen and sunglasses? Tell that to the more than 1,000 people who die from melanoma each year,” were some of the responses Llorente received on his Instagram post.
Additionally, Llorente responded to a comment from a user identified as “lanutricionadora,” saying: “The sun is not the problem; it's our relationship with it, our diet, and artificial light. Some industries don't want us to know that,” he commented.
