Javier Aguirre on Rafa Márquez as a Coach: "He Has Surprised Me"
Javier Aguirre, Mexico's national football team coach, has expressed his pleasant surprise at Rafael Márquez's role as a coach and assistant. "He has surprised me greatly. I had him as a player in two World Cups, so I know him well. But now he has shown a level of poise and leadership that is impressive," Aguirre said, just a day before the friendly match against New Zealand, which will mark Aguirre's third stint as Mexico’s manager.
Aguirre, who was appointed as head coach in July, is set to lead Mexico through the 2026 World Cup before handing over the reins to Márquez, who has signed a contract to guide the team through the 2030 World Cup.
"Rafa has been a great help. He has an excellent background as both a player and a coach (at FC Barcelona), and he brings a fresh perspective to the game. I’ve even entrusted him with the team, and he handles it very well. He’s a football man through and through—five World Cups, Champions League titles, and he’s Mexican. What more can you ask for?" Aguirre praised the former FC Barcelona star.
