Javier Aguirre Attacked in Honduras; Concacaf Condemns the Incident
The match between Honduras and Mexico, part of the Concacaf Nations League quarterfinals, was overshadowed by a troubling incident at the end of the game. Javier Aguirre, head coach of the Mexican national team, was struck on the head by a can thrown by a fan, leaving him with a bleeding wound.
The incident occurred as Aguirre approached the opposing bench to greet Honduras coach Reinaldo Rueda. At that moment, the projectile hit his head in full view of players, coaching staff, officials, and fans at the stadium in Tegucigalpa. Despite the severity of the situation, Aguirre requested to be taken directly to the locker room without receiving medical attention on the field.
This violent act also provoked strong reactions from Mexico's players. Diego Lainez attempted to confront the fans responsible but was pulled away by his teammates, who guided him toward the locker room.
Concacaf Condemnation and Reactions
Concacaf released a statement strongly condemning the attack and announced that the case would be referred to its Disciplinary Committee for further investigation. "The safety of teams and fans is a top priority for Concacaf. This type of violent behavior has no place in football," the organization emphasized.
Honduras coach Reinaldo Rueda expressed his dismay over the incident. “This cannot happen again, not here or in any stadium in the world. It’s unfortunate because it happened to coach Aguirre, but it could have happened to me or anyone else. It’s unacceptable,” Rueda stated.
In contrast, Aguirre downplayed the incident during the post-match press conference, stating that, up until that point, he had been treated well by the hosts.
