Investigation Underway Following Assault on Javier Aguirre
CONCACAF has expressed its "strong condemnation" of the assault on Mexico's national coach, Javier Aguirre, who was struck in the head by a can thrown by a fan during the match between Honduras and Mexico in San Pedro Sula. The organization has announced that it will initiate an investigation into the incident.
The case has been referred to the CONCACAF Disciplinary Commission for "review and investigation" due to the severity of the assault, which caused Aguirre to bleed from a cut on his head, according to a statement from the organization.
"The safety of teams and fans is a priority for CONCACAF. Such violent behavior has no place in football," states the FIFA-affiliated confederation.
The incident occurred at the end of the match, which Honduras won 2-0 in the first leg of the CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinals.
As he went to greet the Honduran coach, Reinaldo Rueda, Aguirre was hit by the object, causing him to bleed and requiring medical attention.
Aguirre downplayed the incident, while Rueda expressed his condemnation: "This cannot happen again, not here, not in any stadium in Honduras, nor in any stadium in the world. I am sad because he is a human being, because just as they hit the coach, they could have hit me; he was coming to greet me at that moment."
