Gerard Piqué Chooses Between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo
When asked to choose between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, and to reveal who impressed him the most during his career, Gerard Piqué had no trouble making his decision.
In sports, it's very rare to be considered the greatest of all time. In tennis, for example, it’s impossible to reach a consensus among fans of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, or other legends; followers of these champions usually don't agree when it comes to settling the eternal debate about who is the GOAT in the sport. Even in basketball, to this day, some still dispute that same "Greatest of All Time" status attributed to Michael Jordan, especially now that LeBron James is nearing the end of his career. And in the world of football, it’s even more challenging to achieve unanimity among players, experts, and fans.
In short, while some may find it difficult to choose between two great figures of a sport, for others, it’s easier to decide. In a recent interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Gerard Piqué was asked to name who, between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, impressed him the most throughout his career. The former defender, who had the privilege of sharing the locker room with both multiple Ballon d'Or winners during his time at Manchester United and FC Barcelona, did not hesitate in his response.
Piqué Favors Messi
“Messi has always been different from everyone else. Cristiano is the best among humans, but Leo is an alien; he doesn’t belong on this planet. I watched him train every day, doing incredible things. There will never be someone with his speed of thought and determination. He arrived at Barça at the age of 13 and played exactly the same way, both in the academy and in the first team,” explained the former center-back, who is now a respected businessman. Although his opinion is clear, honest, and understandable, it will certainly never put an end to the debate among the fans of these two football legends.
