Former Fenerbahçe Player Shot in Istanbul
Former Turkish international Serhat Akin has suffered a violent attack in which he was shot multiple times in the ankle, the ex-footballer announced on social media on Friday. Akin, who currently serves as a commentator on a sports program in Turkey, stated, “As I was leaving the program, I was shot in the feet; our last words are Fenerbahçe,” on his account on the social platform X.
He included a photo apparently taken while he was lying on the pavement in a street in Istanbul, wearing shorts, with his right ankle visibly injured and covered in blood, alongside a trail of blood on the ground.
Akin was admitted to a hospital in Istanbul, and according to his friend Tuncay Sanli, current coach of Ümraniyespor, his medical condition is “very good,” although he is feeling “down.”
Sanli indicated that the injury is not serious and that Akin will likely undergo surgery tomorrow.
As of now, no information has been released regarding the assailant(s) or the motives behind the attack, which took place after Akin left the studios of the sports channel Spor Digitale, where he has been part of the sports journalism team since April.
Akin is a vocal supporter of Fenerbahçe in Istanbul, where he played from 2000 to 2005, and in recent years, he has often presented the club as a victim of alleged machinations within Turkish football.
Both Fenerbahçe and the Turkish Football Federation have condemned the attack against Akin, who represented the Turkish national team from 2002 to 2014.
