End of the Saga: Real Madrid to Receive La Liga Trophy on This Date
Real Madrid will finally receive the La Liga trophy for the 2023-24 season on Tuesday, May 14th, at the Santiago Bernabéu, against Alavés, instead of Saturday, May 12th, in the match against Granada as initially decided by the RFEF. The federation reconsidered its stance after considering the arguments put forth by the club.
After clinching the title in Matchday 34, without being able to receive the cup after defeating Cádiz and needing Barcelona to lose to Girona, which subsequently happened, Real Madrid received notification on Monday that the trophy would be awarded in their next league fixture.
The club, "surprised" by the decision of the RFEF and "out of respect" for a Granada side potentially facing relegation on the same day, communicated that they did not wish to receive the cup. The Federation's response came swiftly, and following discussions, it was decided that on Matchday 36, when Real Madrid hosts Alavés at the Bernabéu on May 14th, the champion team will receive the trophy and celebrate with their fans.
Interestingly, due to the second leg of the Champions League semifinals against Bayern Munich, which takes place on Wednesday, Real Madrid postponed their meeting with fans at La Cibeles fountain to Sunday, May 12th.
