Diego Lainez Out of Copa América for Mexico
Diego Lainez, winger for Tigres UANL, is out of the preliminary roster for the Mexican national team for the Copa América due to injury and has been replaced by Jordi Cortizo from Monterrey, the Mexican Football Federation announced on Thursday.
“Diego Lainez is out of our summer call-up due to a right ankle issue that has been bothering him since the end of the tournament and unfortunately hasn't improved. Together with Tigres, it was decided that he would leave the training camp to start his recovery process as soon as possible,” the Mexican national team explained in a message on their X account.
Lainez was on Mexico's preliminary list of 31 players for the Copa América announced on May 10, and the former Real Betis player was in the running for a spot in the continental tournament during the upcoming friendly matches.
However, the speedy player will return to his club, and Cortizo, who has been performing well with Monterrey, semifinalists in the current Mexican tournament, will join the training camp. Before the Copa América, the team will have friendly matches against Bolivia on May 31, Uruguay on June 5, and Brazil three days later.
After these matches, Jaime Lozano, the Mexican national team coach, will announce the final roster of players who will represent the country in the tournament, which will take place from June 20 to July 14 in the United States.
