Cádiz CF Saves 87-Year-Old Woman from Eviction
The Cádiz CF Foundation, associated with the Spanish soccer team that was relegated from La Liga this season, has resolved the longstanding issue facing María Muñoz, an 88-year-old Cádiz resident who was set to be evicted from her home on June 27. The foundation purchased her apartment, allowing her to remain there for the rest of her life.
Cádiz CF President Manuel Vizcaíno, Vice President Rafael Contreras, and Foundation Manager Pepe Mata surprised María yesterday after signing a purchase agreement for the apartment where María has lived since 1967 and from which she was about to be evicted due to a court ruling.
The purchase ends María's struggle, supported by her three daughters, neighborhood solidarity, and entities such as the Ombudsman and the "Adopt a Grandparent" initiative.
María has lived in this home since 1967, renting it with her husband. However, when her husband passed away a few years ago, she failed to complete the paperwork to transfer the old rent contract, leaving her in a legal limbo.
The property owners, who own the entire building, wanted to sell it as a whole. When that failed, they decided to sell it unit by unit, converting some apartments into vacation rentals. María was given two years to find a new home, after which the owners initiated legal proceedings resulting in the eviction order.
The owners had offered to sell María the apartment for 147,000 euros, but she and her daughters could not afford it. Even a constructor’s offer of an under-construction house didn’t solve the issue in time.
The Cádiz CF Foundation stepped in, purchasing the apartment for 147,000 euros so María can stay indefinitely, paying her old rent of 97 euros per month. The owners have filed a request with the court to suspend the eviction.
