(VIDEO) Brahim Díaz SCORES First Goal for Morocco!
Real Madrid player Brahim Díaz made his mark by scoring his first goal for the nation he chose to represent. This occurred during Matchday 1 of the qualifiers for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.
How did Morocco fare against Gabon?
Morocco began their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign with a commanding 4-1 victory over Gabon at the Grand Stade of Agadir on Friday.
Despite already having secured their place in the tournament as hosts, the Atlas Lions delivered an impressive performance. Hakim Ziyech led the charge, showcasing his skill with a standout display.
The Galatasaray midfielder opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a Panenka-style penalty, awarded after Ez Abde was fouled in the box. Ziyech’s bold shot skimmed just above the ground, leaving Gabon's goalkeeper with no chance.
Gabon’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had the opportunity to equalize from the spot shortly after but saw his effort rebound off the post.
The first half was action-packed, featuring four penalties in total. Ziyech converted his second penalty of the game, while Aubameyang redeemed himself by scoring on his second attempt, pulling Gabon closer.
In the second half, Morocco extended their lead when Brahim Díaz scored his debut goal for the national team in the 59th minute, finishing off a swift counterattack. Ayoub El Kaabi sealed the win with a fourth goal in the 82nd minute, ensuring a comfortable victory for Morocco.
Although Morocco’s qualification for AFCON 2025 is already assured as hosts, they are determined to assert their dominance in their group, which includes Gabon, the Central African Republic, and Lesotho.
The tournament, set to be held from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, will mark Morocco’s return to the continental stage as one of Africa’s football powerhouses. Building on their historic fourth-place finish at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Morocco continues to enhance their reputation in both African and global football.
