In an intense and tactical battle, Cape Verde and Egypt drew 1-1 at the Cape Verde National Stadium during the fifth round of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The result leaves both teams with mixed emotions in their quest for a spot in the continental tournament.  

Egypt Takes an Early Lead

The visitors dominated the first half with an offensive approach and broke the deadlock in the 35th minute. Taher Mohamed capitalized on a defensive lapse by Cape Verde, finishing precisely to give the Pharaohs the lead. Egypt maintained control until halftime, displaying solid performance across all lines.  

Cape Verde Strikes Back from the Penalty Spot

In the second half, the home team adjusted its strategy and managed to level the match. A penalty awarded to Cape Verde in the 66th minute shifted the momentum. Ryan Mendes converted from the spot in the 69th minute, igniting celebrations among the local fans. 

Although both sides pressed for a winner in the final minutes, strong defensive displays kept the scoreline unchanged. The referee added five minutes of stoppage time, but neither team could capitalize on their chances.

With this draw, Egypt remains atop its group with a solid qualifying campaign, while Cape Verde picks up a valuable point that keeps their mathematical chances of advancing alive.
