Sebastián Montoya and his Next Dream: "I hope to be in Formula 1 in a couple of years"
Meet the son of Juan Pablo Montoya, the legendary Colombian F1 driver
Last names and legacies in sports often carry significance. Juan Pablo Montoya was a prominent racing driver from Bogotá, Colombia, who made his mark in Formula 1 with the Williams and McLaren teams between 2001 and 2006. He also competed in NASCAR and the IndyCar Series.
Throughout his career, the Colombian raced on iconic F1 circuits like Monaco, Interlagos, Monza, and Silverstone, and he has participated in endurance races such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans and Daytona, as well as the famous Indianapolis 500. He is undoubtedly among the world's best drivers.
His passion has been passed down to his son, Sebastián Montoya, who, at 19 years old, is already in Formula 3 with the Campos Racing team, aiming to continue his father's legacy.
"I hope to be in Formula 1 in a couple of years," confessed Sebastián Montoya to beIN Sports USA at a Red Bull And NEON16 event prior to the Miami Grand Prix.
Sebastián Montoya was born in Miami, Florida, on April 11, 2005, and from a young age, he demonstrated boundless ambition and a fervent desire to stand out among his competitors. These qualities he shares with his father, who achieved third place in the Formula 1 World Championship on two occasions, in 2002 and 2003, as well as Ayrton Senna, the multi-time Formula 1 champion, whom he has cited as his source of inspiration.
"They have always been my dad and Ayrton Senna my idols. My dad for being my dad and one of the best in the sport, and Ayrton Senna for his mindset," said Montoya.
Ahead of the sixth Grand Prix of the 2024 season, Sebastián Montoya proudly represents the city he also considers home. "It's really good, I lived in Miami for many years. It's like my home, to be honest, I lived here for 13 years. It's the first time I've come to the race, and the mix of cultures is incredible," said Sebastián Montoya.
Sebastián Montoya has achieved good results since his early days in karting, until he started competing with Prema Powerteam in the ADAC Formula 4 in 2020. His best result to date has been a fourth place in the Italian Formula 4 with the Tatuus F4 T014 car, with the aforementioned team.
To conclude, the Colombian-American wanted to give a message to young people dreaming of becoming drivers, "the biggest thing is to work hard and enjoy the sport. Enjoy the journey," he emphasized.
