Russell Delivers Victory to Hamilton After Being Disqualified from the Belgian Grand Prix
George Russell (Mercedes) has been disqualified from the Belgian Grand Prix, where he initially crossed the finish line first, handing the victory to his teammate and fellow Brit, Lewis Hamilton. Russell was stripped of the win after it was discovered that his Mercedes was underweight following the race.
Russell had secured the win with a one-stop strategy, managing his hard tires until the checkered flag and finishing just half a second ahead of Hamilton. However, a technical delegate's report published after the race revealed that while the car initially met the minimum weight requirement of 798 kilograms, it was later found to be 2.8 liters short on fuel.
The report states: "The car was not completely emptied in accordance with the draining procedure submitted by the team in their legality documents, as per Article 6.5.2 of the technical regulations."
As a result, the podium was completed by Oscar Piastri (McLaren) in second place and Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) in third. Meanwhile, the Drivers' Championship leader, Max Verstappen, finished in fourth place, adding 12 points to maintain his lead.
